Communication in a relationship is very important. It is not only to strengthen the bond but at the same time to deepen mutual understanding. I've had valuable exposure to friends who have exprienced commincation barrier in their relationship, specifically in a marriage.
Personally, I've always made it a point to always be open with my partner. And I hope that he's always been open with me. But no matter how much we want our partner to open up to us, there will be times when we deem it necessary not to reveal too much to our partner. But the strange thing is, some of us find it easier to share our thoughts and concern with close friends.
But why is this?
In my opinion, there are several factors why couples do not always reveal every little detail to their partners but rather prefer to share their thoughts and concerns with close friends. The possible factors in influencing this are:
Do not wish to burden the partner with that particular information
Do not wish to hurt the feelings of the partner
Do not wish to be seen possessing any weaknesses
Felt no obligation telling a friend as opposed to a partner
Unable to change habit of not sharing with partner
Of course, there are many other factors or attributes what have the potential to influence this behaviour. But it is the methods on how best to ensure effective communication that couples should be interested in.
For couples who are facing problems in communicating and sharing their inner most feelings with their partners, this is not uncommon. To resolve it, couples need to take the initiative to actually make space and find time to sit down with their partners and actually talk. Not empty talk. But heart to heart talk. It may feel awkward for couples who have never done it before. But once we find the pace and comfort zone doing this particular exercise, it will definitely make a difference in the couples' lives together.
There is nothing wrong in sharing our thoughts with our loved ones. There is nothing wrong in making mistakes and admitting it. But it would be wrong to shut out your loved ones from the reality of your lives. So give it a try. Have a heart to heart talk. Make sure the environment is suitable. Remember "it takes two to tango". This can only work if both sides are willing to play it.
